Top 5 Holiday Secrets by Rebecca Taylor

Today's top five secrets are from Rebecca Taylor, author of Ascendant. For more information on Rebecca and her books, click here.

Favorite Holiday Drink: I actually don’t drink alcohol anymore…I gave it up over a year ago. And now you’re asking yourself, “Is she an…??” And the answer is, “No J” I just found that it got to the point where even a single glass of wine would leave me exhausted and with a terrible headache—and since I’m working, raising kids, and trying pursue a writing career, I don’t have time for things that leave me feeling awful. Sooooo, my favorite holiday drink is a non-dairy hot chocolate (seeing as how I don’t drink dairy either!) Geesh, I’m sounding a bit high maintenance. (I swear I’m not!)

Holiday Embarrassing Moment: The first Thanksgiving I spent with my husband’s (then boyfriend’s) family, I fell asleep on the couch after dinner. They were super gracious about it, even so…yes, I was embarrassed.

The Best Holiday Gift I Ever Gave: The first Christmas my husband and I spent together, I had a Christmas ornament engraved with our names, the date, and “Our First Christmas Together.” When he opened it, he turned away from me and was quiet for an awkward length of time. It took me a moment to realize he was doing one of those controlled-man-cries. I never asked him why, but after seventeen years together, I have a pretty good idea about why that simple ornament floored him that way. I will always remember that.

My Ho-Ho-Hopeless Romantic Holiday Wish List:
  1. To be able to write books as my full time career
  2. To travel to as least three different countries a year with my family
  3. To own a beach cottage (a real cottage!)
  4. To go on a fabulous tropical vacation with my ENTIRE family—even the super crazy ones—at least once before my grandparents get much older

What I love about the holidays: Christmas lights EVERYWHERE.

What I hate about the holidays: Putting up Christmas lights.

Top 5 Holiday Secrets by Heather L Reid

Today's top five is brought to you by Heather L. Reid, author of Dark Pretty Nothing. For more information on Heather and her books, click here.

Favorite Holiday Drink: Hot Dark Mint Chocolate with a splash of Baileys Irish Crème. Yum!

Favorite Holiday Movie: I have to say I love both Elf and A Christmas Story for two similar reasons. The writing is so clever that the jokes never get old. Who wouldn’t love Will Ferrell as the world’s largest elf, right? And watching Ralphie have to walk down those stairs in that bunny suit, and the leg lamp, and the, ‘you’ll shoot your eye out, kid.’ Guess what I’ll be watching tonight.

Why I Love the Holidays: This time of year will always hold a special place in my heart. Seven years ago, on Christmas Eve, I flew to Scotland to meet my husband in person for the very first time. After over a year of talking on the phone, skype chats, and online gaming, (we met playing Star Wars Galaxies online) we would finally be in the same country, in fact, the same room! To walk off that plane and into the arms of the love of my life will be a moment I’ll remember for the rest of my life. Seven years later, we both equate the Holidays with love and joy.

Favorite Holiday Tradition: My husband and have a tradition of buying each other one Star Wars gift each year in memory of how we met. We also use our game avatar names on the tags. It’s as if our characters, the first way in which we fell in love, are giving each other gifts.

Worst Holiday Treat: I can’t stand eggnog. Yuk!!!

Top 5 Holiday Secrets from Carol Oates

Merry Christmas! Today's holiday secrets are from Carol Oates, author of Shades of Atlantis, Ember, and Iridescent (Embers #2). For more information on Carol and here books, click here.

Favorite Holiday Drink - Let’s get started with a cocktail or two. We usually have a big family Christmas and it’s also my birthday, so it’s a double celebration. We usually start with the morning with a breakfast of smoked salmon and scrambled eggs with bucks fizz(champagne and orange juice). In the afternoon we have nibbles and cocktails. My brother will make me a pina colada, not very festive, but I do love them.
We also have a drink called an Oates Special. My dad makes these legendary creamy brandy cocktails with just a touch of ginger and keeps the exact recipe secret. Neighbors and friends have popped in for one for many years before dinner. A real winter warmer and absolutely my favorite.
There’s always a little eggnog to round off the day.

Why I Love the Holidays - This is an easy one. I love having family around me at Christmas. It’s hard to get everyone together through the year.

Favorite Holiday Tradition - We have family traditions of course. My son(18) is special needs so he is not a fan of Christmas. There has to be some kind of structure to the holidays to help him participate. So we have a lot of traditions. We visit the Christmas market every year and drink hot chocolate. Christmas week we’ll go into the city to see the lights and more hot chocolate. We’ll also go to a nice food shop in the city where he’ll pick out his own food for the day, among other traditions.

They might sound like peculiar favorites but anyone with an autistic young person in the house will know how much it’s taken to get to this stage. I really love it when I see him get excited about these few things.

I have a couple of personal traditions I really enjoy and they allow me some downtime on what can otherwise be a frantic month. I put the tree up when there’s no one around and I’ll put on a Christmas movie and have a glass of wine, taking a few hours to get it just right. On Christmas Eve, I do all the food prep and makes three or four desserts while the house is quite. Then I’ll arrange the table with that years arrangement. This leaves me plenty of free time on the day.

Favorite Holiday Treat - This is sort of another tradition really. On the 26th, I spend the day watching movies with my son or reading a book and eating leftovers. After all the rushing about it’s wonderful.

Favorite Holiday Movie - I know the question is for one, but there are so many to choose from. Love Actually is a favorite for tree trimming. I like that there isn’t a happy ever after for every character, some reach acceptance and a sense of peace with their lot. I think there’s something very real about that. I also love A wonderful Life for the same reason. I’m sort of sad they are attempting to remake it. It’s a classic. I’m a sucker for old movies and The Bishop’s Wife with Cary Grant was ruined for me when they remade it to The Preacher’s Wife. I can’t watch the original without thinking of the disaster of a remake.

Happy Holidays!

Top 5 Holiday Secrets by L.V. Pires

Today’s holiday top five are brought to you by L.V. Pires, author of Oliver Conroy and His Repossessed Soul. You can find more information on Lisa and her books here.
Favorite Holiday Drink:  When not indulging in every Starbucks’ holiday coffee including Peppermint Mocha and CrΓ¨me Brulee Lattes, I’m a huge sucker for mulled wine, a traditional GlΓΌhwein, spiced with cinnamon and cloves would melt this writer’s cold heart.

My Holiday Wish for the World:  My holiday wish for the world is for there to be less stress.  Is anyone else stressed out?  Geez!  I wish for more time to relax and enjoy life.  Maybe that’s it—free yoga classes for everyone!

Favorite Holiday Movie/Book (and why):  My favorite holiday movie is “A Christmas Carol”.  Check out the 1951 version with Alastair Sim.  It’s is probably the best version.  My favorite holiday book is C.S. Lewis’ The Chronicles of Narnia.  Both stories bring out the dark sides of human nature while revealing the power of good.

Why I Love/Hate the Holidays:  I love the holidays.  More time with my children.  Baking cookies.  Wrapping Gifts.  Putting up the tree.  Sleigh rides.  Caroling.  Shopping.  Decorating.  Tinsel…okay, I’m totally overwhelmed by the holidays.  When are they over?

Favorite Holiday Treat:  Favorite treat is anything in the form of a Christmas cookie. Any shape will do, sprinkles and frosting are encouraged.  But, my most favorite treat is my family’s famous Dobos Torte.  Five layers of sponge cake layered with chocolate buttercream and topped with thin caramel slices.  Blurp.

Top 5 Holiday Secrets by Dorothy Dreyer

Today's holiday secrets are from Dorothy Dreyer, author of My Sister's Reaper. You can learn more about Dorothy and her books here.

Ah the holidays! What a wonderful time of the year. Although I’m not a fan of winter, I do love when it snows. And there are some other things surrounding the holidays that simply warm my heart. Here are a few things I love about this time of year.

Favorite Holiday Drink: I’m not a big drinker, really. I do have an occasional wine or Mojito or champagne, but my guilty pleasure is a virgin eggnog, if it’s made just right.

Source:  http://whydyoueatthat.files.wordpress.com/2011/12/eggnog.jpg

Favorite Holiday Movie: I love the movie The Holiday, with Cameron Diaz, Kate Winslet, Jack Black, and Jude Law. It’s funny and heartwarming and full of special moments, and I love how Kate’s character goes from a doormat to someone who can stand up for herself.

My Holiday Wish for the World: World peace, of course, but also I really hope the economy gets better for everyone. More jobs, better healthcare, better opportunities for a good education. So basically, a euphoric system.

Favorite Holiday Tradition: On Christmas Eve, we go to evening mass. But before we drive off, I always tell the kids I forgot something in the house. So while they’re in the car, I pull out all the presents and stick them under the tree. After mass, when we get home, we act surprised that “Santa” has paid us a visit. Okay, this worked the first few years. My kids are teenagers now and totally know this trick, but they laugh along anyway. I can’t imagine we’d ever stop pretending, even when they’re grown. It’s too fun!

Favorite Holiday Treat: I live in Germany, and although I’m American, we don’t celebrate a traditional American Thanksgiving. It’s a normal school and work day for us. So we always push our big turkey dinner to Christmas Day. I’m in the kitchen slaving away for the big meal, but when we finally all sit down together for the feast, it’s totally worth it.

Top 5 Holiday Secrets by Katie O’Sullivan

Katie O'Sullivan, author of Son of a Mermaid and Blood of a Mermaid, is sharing her best and worst of the holidays. For more information on Katie and her books, click here.

Favorite Holiday Drink: Champagne. It’s a special kind of drink I don’t indulge in very often, but I love clinking glasses with my sister-in-law during family gatherings. We add a splash of Pomegranate juice or cranberry to make it festive!

Worst Gift I Ever Received: Tupperware. Not to throw my husband under the proverbial bus, but it’s become something of a joke in our house that he tends to give me new sets of Tupperware at Christmas. Like, every year. I’m done. Got enough. Really.

Favorite & Worst Holiday Movies: My all-time favorite holiday movie is IT’S A WONDERFUL LIFE, and I totally get that it’s old-fashioned and cheesy and tear-jerking… but I still love it, and have to see it at least once during the Christmas season. A very close second is A CHARLIE BROWN CHRISTMAS (and the soundtrack!) In fact, I love almost all the traditional Christmas cartoons…but there are a few exceptions. I can’t stand “Grandma got Run Over By a Reindeer” and I really can’t stand “Rudolf’s Shiny New Year.” I mean, really? Who watches some of these?

My Holiday Wish for the World: My holiday wish is for an environmental solution to climate change – well first, for everyone to acknowledge that there’s a real problem going on, and then for smarter heads than mine to figure out how we can solve the problems. I live along the shore of the Atlantic, and have watched the changes happening with our oceans first hand.

Favorite/Worst Holiday Treat: My favorite holiday treats are Christmas cookies – any kind, shape or flavor! We love to bake the traditional favs and find new recipes to try out every year. The worst treat? Fruitcake. (Does anyone ever really eat it?)

Ho, Ho, Huh? - Kym Brunner’s Top 5 Rules on Surviving The Holidays with Weird Relatives

*Kym is the author of the upcoming novels Wanted: Dead or In Love and One Smart Cookie. For more information, please check here:

You know it’s true. Every year, your wonderful (ahem) but crazy, bossy, manner-lacking, stranger-than-fiction relatives come into town and it’s your job to host them or entertain them for part of the time. There’s no getting around this, so how can you survive the week without strangling them?

Let’s nail down some basic rules of a strangle-free ‘Tis the Season yearly visit:

1) DRINK ALCOHOL

My new fave? Pineapple Upside-Down Shot (or Martini)

The moment I tasted it a few months back, I was immediately reminded of my sweet, 20-year-departed, grandmother. (Hi Gram! Miss you! You weren’t one of the weird relatives, I swear. When you kept your mile-long hair swept up in a cute bun and you wore your apron, you looked like a grandma version of Angelina Jolie in Mr. and Mrs. Smith.)

TRUE CONFESSION:  I didn’t actually like her pineapple-upside-down cake as a kid (does any kid, really?) but somehow time heals all taste buds. Now I say…YUM! (Triple for a martini-style cocktail.)

Drink two or three of these and you can easily block out all the rambling of talkative Uncle GoesOnAndOn.

1 oz. vanilla cake vodka (UV or Pinnacle)
1 oz. pineapple juice
Drizzle of grenadine

2. WATCH HOLIDAY MOVIES ON TV

The more time you watch holiday movies, the less you have to entertain them.  I don’t have a favorite – I prefer to go to the movies and see whatever’s playing (see #5) – but this scene from the holiday classic, “When Harry Met Sally,” is pretty memorable. If nothing else, it ought to make everyone quiet for at least two minutes. Snicker…

3) GO TO YOUR BIGGEST LOCAL TOWN TO SEE THE HOLIDAY DECORATIONS:

Most towns do something to commemorate the holiday season. Check out these two lovely examples:

I never said they'd be good! Since I’m lucky enough to live in the Chicago area, it's downtown it is for me. Not too shabby.

Magnificent Mile (Michigan Avenue)
The Walnut Room in Macy's

4) PLAY GAMES

Apples to Apples is our family favorite. We make the person who gave the worst answer for each round drink a shot, but maybe that’s just our family. (Are you seeing the theme here?)

5) GO SEE A NEW HOLIDAY MOVIE ….and for the BEST results, go to a theater that serves alcohol. (see # 1)
